Some Interesting Fashion Facts... Pt 1

I'm doing some research and I keep running across all these weird little facts, figures and myths that are kicking around out about textiles. Here's a few. Some are plain interesting and some are good for a giggle.....

Have you ever wondered what the difference between vintage and antique is? Vintage would include those fashion items post WW1 – less than 100 years old. Antique are those items over 100 years or previous to WW1. There’s another category called Retro. That is those items that are post 1960.

False eyelashes were first invented in 1916 by a Hollywood producer named D.W. Griffith. Seems one of the actresses had little thin eye lashes that did not show up on film. He had one of his hair dressing staff create fake ones out of human hair. Eww…….

Napoleon Bonaparte ordered bottons to be attached to the jacket sleeves so as to prevent soldiers from wiping their noses on their sleeves. Double Eww…….

Today, its very common to see women and girls with short hair. But did you know decades ago, if a woman was spotted with short hair, she was considered to be an unfaithful wife? Wonder what a pink hair lady was......

You know those low waisted baggy pants you see on the kids in the malls? You know the ones - where their undies are on display for all to see? That fashion originated in the prisons of Los Angeles. Inmates are not allowed to wear a belt. Its considered a safety hazard.

Cant say I'd want to be advertising I know what prison fashion is, but to each his own....

We all know jewellery, is an important part of a womans life. Did you know men where the first wearers of jewellery? It all started with kings and royal personages who liked to advetise their status and victories in battle. They wore the valuables of their conquered for all to see.
